Guiding Question/Big Idea: Reflections on Field Trip
- Halloween
- Sign Thank You Card
- Blog Post: Microbiology – blog ideas/prompts
- Places with the most microbes?
- Are all microbes bad?
- What was your procedure, what did you observe? Is this an accurate representation of all organisms in the environment you swabbed?
- How do these microbes work and spread? How do they respond to different stimuli in their environment? Temperature or beginning to metabolize different resources? Increases enzyme growth and gene expression?
General Notes from the Day
– MacKonkey, Brilliant Green Bile both select for gram negative (how is selection as work?)! LB was a general purpose medium.
– Different metabolism occurs in different bacteria! Different colours infer different groups (E. Coli, Salmonella)!
– What is actually present in the environment… only 1% of that is what we observe in petri dishes.
– Biofilm
– Metagenomics – DNA signature of who is present in the environment. Whole sequencing and profiling approach (finding common DNA stretches or barcodes)
– Relevance: water quality testing?
- Exam is Approaching (November 9th – Sample Application Questions will be provided on Thursday) (like the final)
